The Online Business Landscape Has Changed

A decade ago, you could grab a URL, slap up a site, post a few times, and boom—you had an audience and a business. That’s not the case anymore. The market is saturated, and people have more choices than ever. Just showing up isn’t enough. You need a strategy, consistency, and patience. More than ever, you need to understand your niche, craft a strong offer, and find ways to differentiate yourself from the competition.

The Biggest Mistake New Entrepreneurs Make

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that people think they can throw together a course, set up a website site, post a few times, and start raking in cash. Nope. It takes time to build an audience, earn trust, and refine your messaging. Success is built on consistency and persistence—those who stick it out and refine their approach over time are the ones who make it (in my humble opinion!).

Social Media Isn’t a Magic Bullet

Yes, social media is important, but it’s not going to do all the work for you. Just because you post doesn’t mean people will see it—let alone buy from you. You have to be intentional with your content, show up consistently, and provide real value. Paid ads can definitely help you, but if you want to use them, I highly recommend you work with someone who knows what they are doing as it can be a pricey lesson! If you don't have a budget for paid ads then you need to be okay with slower organic growth. Social media should be a tool within your larger marketing strategy, not your only strategy.

Branding and Website Matter More Than Ever

Your DIY Word Doc logo and mish mashed website might have worked in 2012, but not anymore. There’s no excuse for bad branding in 2025. People make split-second decisions based on what they see. If your website looks unprofessional, potential customers will move on. GOOD DESIGN IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS A strong, cohesive brand builds credibility and trust. If design isn’t your thing, hire someone. Your business depends on it.

You Need to Be Hands-On

You can outsource tasks, but you can’t outsource the vision and intention behind your business. If you’re not engaged in running and growing your business, no one else will be either. No OBM, VA, or marketing team is going to care about your business as much as you do. Learning how your business operates—even at a basic level—will save you stress and make you a more effective leader.

Passion and Longevity Win

Starting an online business just to make money won’t get you far. You need to actually love what you do, because there will be hard days. If you don’t have the passion to push through the struggles, burnout is inevitable. Your business should excite you—not feel like a chore. The people who win in this space are those who genuinely care about their work and the people they serve.
